Chennai is one of the more conservative Indian metro cities and generally safe for solo women during the day. Marina Beach is the world's second-longest beach and is busy and safe in the morning and evening; avoid after dark. Besant Nagar (Elliot's Beach) is calmer and has a café strip nearby that is safe for solo women late. T Nagar and Mylapore are the main shopping and cultural areas — busy and safe in daylight. Use Ola or Rapido for all transport; Chennai autos often refuse to use meters.
Marina Beach: safe for walking and photography in the morning (6–9am) and evening (5–8pm) when it is crowded with locals. Avoid after 9pm — the far ends of the beach are unlit and isolated. Besant Nagar (Elliot's Beach) is significantly calmer than Marina and is the recommended beach for solo women — the Kasimir café strip alongside is well-lit and active until late. Covelong (Kovalam) beach near ECR is popular with surfers and has a cleaner, calmer vibe than Marina but is a 40-minute drive from the city.
Chennai Metro is the safest and most comfortable option for cross-city travel — well-lit, air-conditioned, and has women-only coaches. Ola and Rapido are the safest road transport — tracked, app-priced, driver identity confirmed. Chennai autos frequently refuse meters and quote fixed (inflated) rates to tourists; use Ola Auto to avoid negotiation. The MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) is useful for the coast route but older and less comfortable than Metro. For airport transfers: Ola is reliable from the designated pick-up zone outside arrivals.
Chennai is more conservative than Bangalore or Mumbai. At temples (Kapaleeshwarar, Parthasarathy, Meenakshi Amman in Madurai nearby): cover shoulders and knees; many temples require removing shoes and some restrict non-Hindus from the inner sanctum. On Marina Beach: Western swimwear is not appropriate on public beach areas — locals do not swim in swimwear. In café and restaurant areas (Besant Nagar, Nungambakkam): Western clothing is fine. Salwar kameez or kurta with jeans reduces harassment noticeably in market and temple areas.
