Violent attack at Sanapur : women assaulted, tourist killed

On 6 March 2025, a group of five tourists stargazing at Sanapur was attacked by three local construction workers. Two women were sexually assaulted and an Indian male tourist was murdered. Israeli and other foreign tourists evacuated. Three suspects arrested. Avoid isolated spots around Sanapur at night; stay in groups and inform your guesthouse of plans.

Tourist spots completely unsafe after dark : no lighting, no security

A Koppal police officer confirmed to The Federal (Mar 2025): 'Tourist spots become unsafe after dark due to poor lighting and no security.' Avoid solo walks after sunset, especially along the riverfront, between ruins, or any area outside Hampi Bazaar. Even in groups, stick to well-lit accommodation areas after 8 PM.

Tuk-tuk mafia at Hospet Junction : 10× fare quotes

Auto-rickshaw drivers mob arriving trains and quote ₹800–2,000 for the 13 km ride to Hampi. Fair rate is ₹200–300. Drivers reportedly threaten competing drivers offering fair prices. If overcharged: walk 20 min to Hospet Bus Stand and take the KSRTC bus to Hampi for ₹18.

Auto-rickshaw lie: 'No bus to Hampi'

Rickshaw drivers routinely tell tourists with a straight face that there's no bus between Hospet and Hampi. False. KSRTC buses run every 20–30 minutes between Hospet Bus Stand and Hampi for ₹18. Drivers tell this lie to force you into a paid rickshaw.

Aggressive monkeys snatch bags, phones, and food

Monkeys throughout Hampi are bold and known to snatch items from tourists' hands and bags : phones, food, sunglasses, water bottles. Multiple Tripadvisor reviews (2024–2025) confirm monkeys jumping onto people at Anjaneya Hill if food is visible. Keep all food sealed inside a backpack. If a monkey grabs something, do NOT fight back : they can bite.

Drug push near heritage zones : illegal, risk of arrest

Cannabis is openly traded near several Hampi viewpoints, often by children posing as booksellers. Police filed 12 drug-related FIRs in 2023 and 10 in 2022. The March 2025 attackers were suspected to be under the influence. Cannabis possession in India can mean 6 months to 10 years imprisonment. Decline firmly.

Full-day auto tour massively overcharged for foreigners

Auto-rickshaw drivers quote ₹1,500–2,500 for a full-day Hampi sightseeing tour. Fair rate is ₹600–800 (off-season can be 40% lower). Drivers target foreign tourists. Negotiate firmly before entering and agree in writing or via phone notes. A cycle (₹100–150/day) or scooter (₹300–350/day) from Hampi Bazaar is far cheaper.

15+ tourist spots have NO security guards or CCTV

Activists confirmed to The New Indian Express (Mar 2025) that more than 15 popular Hampi spots have zero security guards. CCTV exists only near Virupaksha, Vijaya Vittala, and Hemakuta. Isolated spots are especially risky after 3 PM when crowds thin. Explore in groups; avoid these areas after 4 PM.

Unregulated homestays : no verification of guests

Authorities confirmed to The Federal (Mar 2025) that many homestays in North Hampi operate without proper licensing and don't record guest details. This was a contributing factor in the March 2025 attack. Following the incident, government forced closures of many North Hampi guesthouses. Verify your accommodation has a KSTDC or government registration number.

Road accidents on Hampi's potholes : scooters after dark very risky

India has one of the world's highest traffic fatality rates. Hampi's roads combine fast vehicles, roadside boulders, livestock, and pedestrians. Roads between monuments are poorly lit at night. Multiple travellers report near-misses on scooters. Always wear a helmet, drive before dark, avoid riding under the influence. Carry passport/ID in case of police checks.

Coracle overcharging after 6 PM : 10× rate for night crossing

The last official ferry/coracle from North Hampi (Virupapura Gaddi) to South Hampi runs until ~5:30 PM. After that, boatmen charge ₹150–200 per crossing instead of the daytime ₹20–50. If you miss the last boat, the road route around is 40 km. Plan to be back across the river before 5:30 PM.

Unlicensed 'guides' demanding ₹1,500–3,500 for day tours

Unofficial guides quote ₹1,500–3,500 for day tours. The Karnataka Tourism Department has an official guide office near the temple with fixed rates: ₹500 for 4 hours, ₹800 for 8. Unlicensed guides lack knowledge and often take you to commission shops. Hire only through the official tourist office.

Peak season rooms 50% pricier : book well ahead

Between October and March (peak season), Hampi accommodation prices rise 25–50% and quality guesthouses fill weeks ahead. Many travellers arrive to find their casually-confirmed booking not honoured. Always book in writing via a platform (Booking.com, Hostelworld) and get confirmation. Don't rely on WhatsApp-only verbal agreements.

Summer heat: 43°C in Apr–May with no shade

Hampi in April–May regularly hits 43°C. Open granite ruins absorb heat and re-radiate it. Almost no shade structures between monuments. Multiple advisories warn against peak summer visits. If you go, carry minimum 2 L water + ORS, and limit outdoor activity to 7–10 AM and 4–6 PM.

Rocky boulders : multiple accidents climbing without guide

Hampi's boulder terrain looks manageable but ledges and slopes are genuinely dangerous. A Tripadvisor reviewer in 2025 reported a sloping ledge around Matanga Hill where one slip means a fatal fall. No safety rails in many sections. Climb only in daylight, wear grip shoes (not flip-flops), avoid exploring rocky areas off-path alone.
