| Scam | Aggressive monkeys snatch bags, phones, and food Monkeys throughout Hampi are bold and known to snatch items from tourists' hands and bags : phones, food, sunglasses, water bottles. Multiple Tripadvisor reviews (2024–2025) confirm monkeys jumping onto people at Anjaneya Hill if food is visible. Keep all food sealed inside a backpack. | Scam | Drug push near heritage zones : illegal, risk of arrest Cannabis is openly traded near several Hampi viewpoints, often by children posing as booksellers. Police filed 12 drug-related FIRs in 2023 and 10 in 2022. The March 2025 attackers were suspected to be under the influence. Cannabis possession in India can mean 6 months to 10 years imprisonment. | Scam | Coracle overcharging after 6 PM : 10× rate for night crossing The last official ferry/coracle from North Hampi (Virupapura Gaddi) to South Hampi runs until ~5:30 PM. After that, boatmen charge ₹150–200 per crossing instead of the daytime ₹20–50. If you miss the last boat, the road route around is 40 km.
