Manali is manageable for solo women with one key distinction: Mall Road area is significantly safer and more comfortable than Old Manali for solo women. Old Manali has a heavy drug-tourism culture — cannabis is widely offered on the streets and the atmosphere is less comfortable for solo travellers. Mall Road has regular police presence, good guesthouses, and is the safest base. For trekking, always go with a registered guide or group — solo treks in the Solang or Rohtang areas have had incidents.
The main risks in Manali: (1) Drug tourism culture in Old Manali — cannabis is openly offered to tourists; declining firmly and walking on is sufficient. The risk is secondary: some reported incidents involve people drugged by those who offered substances. (2) Unregistered trekking guides — always verify your guide's HPTDC (Himachal Pradesh Tourism) registration before a multi-day trek. (3) Rohtang Pass permit fraud — the permit is obtained online via himachalrohtang.nic.in; touts at bus stands sell fake documents. (4) Vehicle hire scam — inspect the vehicle fully before paying for a hire; breakdown in a remote mountain area is a common complaint.
May–June and September–October are the best windows for Manali. May–June: roads to Rohtang Pass and Lahaul-Spiti begin to open; good trekking weather. July–August: monsoon brings landslide risk on the Manali-Leh Highway; check road conditions before travel. September–October: clear skies, best mountain views, Lahaul circuit fully open. November–April: heavy snowfall, Rohtang closed; some hotels shut. Solang Nalla has snow activities (skiing, snowtubing) from December–February but requires a reliable vehicle to reach safely.
Rohtang Pass (3,978m) requires a permit for all vehicles. Permits are issued online at himachalrohtang.nic.in — open 7 days in advance, limit of 1,200 permits per day. Cost: ₹700 for private cars, ₹400 for two-wheelers (plus environmental fee ₹500). The permit is checked at a barrier 14km before the pass. Taxis from Manali charge ₹2,500–3,500 for the round trip including permit assistance. The pass is typically open May to November; exact opening depends on snow. Altitude sickness is a risk above 3,500m — acclimatise for at least one night in Manali before attempting the pass.
