Varanasi is intense and manageable with preparation. The ghat area is the heart of the city and is busy from 4am (morning aarti) until late. Solo women can walk the main ghat strip from Assi Ghat to Dashashwamedh Ghat safely during the day and for the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh. After 10pm, narrow lanes behind the ghats are poorly lit and isolated — return to your guesthouse via the main roads rather than through the lanes. Silk shops and boat-ride touts at the ghats are aggressive; a clear 'no' and walking on is the only response needed.
The four most reported Varanasi scams: (1) Silk shop bait-and-switch — the quality shown is not what is delivered; buy only what you physically inspect at the point of purchase. (2) Fake 'morning ceremony' invitation — a 'student' invites you to a private ceremony that turns into a sales pitch for silk. (3) Fake blessing scam — a 'holy man' asks your family members' names, blesses them, then demands ₹5,000–20,000. Walk away immediately after any ritual you did not initiate. (4) Boat-ride overcharging — agree price per boat (not per person) before boarding; ₹200–300 is reasonable for sunrise.
Safe and well-frequented ghats for solo women: Assi Ghat (morning yoga, lively café strip, safest base area), Dashashwamedh Ghat (evening aarti, very crowded — busy equals safer but also pickpocket-heavy, keep your bag in front), Manikarnika Ghat (the burning ghat — respectful observation is fine from the upper levels; avoid going down to the burning platforms and decline any guide who offers to take you closer for payment). Avoid isolated ghats north of Manikarnika after 8pm.
The Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga Aarti happens every evening at sunset (approx 6–7pm). Arrive 30–45 minutes early to get a ground-level viewing position. The best views for photography are from the opposite bank (cross by boat: ₹100–150 one way; agree price before boarding). Sitting directly on the ghat steps puts you very close to the ceremony — respectful clothing (covered shoulders, no shorts). The crowd is dense during and after the aarti — keep your bag in front. Boat-ride touts will quote ₹500–1,000 for the same crossing; ₹150 is the going rate.
