Safety verdict
Chiang Mai, Thailand is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. Verified by Devika Joshi, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-04-02.
Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's most solo-female-friendly cities — slower-paced than Bangkok, with a large expat and digital nomad community that makes solo travel straightforward.
The classic tuk-tuk scam: a driver offers a very cheap or free 'temple tour' and takes you to gem or silk shops where he earns a commission. Any tuk-tuk offering cheap tours is running this.
Grab works well in Chiang Mai and is the safest option after dark; red songthaews (shared pickup trucks) are fine during the day for fixed routes around the old city.
Burning season (roughly February through April) fills the valley with smoke from agricultural burning — air quality can be dangerously poor for weeks. Check AQI before booking travel in this window.
Temple dress code is strict: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside. This applies to both the old-city Wats and rural temples where it is taken even more seriously.

I run heritage walks in Hampi twice a month and otherwise work remote from cafés in Pune. My intel skews south — Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, the parts of Andhra Pradesh nobody writes about because they are not Instagrammable.
