Safety verdict
Dubai, UAE is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. The most commonly reported issue is "Unmarked taxi overcharge" : ONLY use RTA taxis (cream + red roof), or Careem/Uber app. Pink taxis (female driver) available via Careem.. Verified by Ananya Iyer, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-04-28.
Dubai is physically very safe for solo women — violent crime is exceptionally rare and tourist areas have a heavy, visible security presence.
Dress conservatively outside malls, hotels, and beach clubs: cover shoulders and knees in souks, government buildings, and residential areas. Swimwear is fine at licensed beach and pool venues.
Alcohol is only legal in licensed venues — most hotels, designated bars, and specific restaurants. Drinking in public spaces, parks, or on the street can result in arrest.
The Dubai Metro is reliable, air-conditioned, and has a dedicated women-and-children carriage at the front of every train — use it for all daytime journeys.
LGBTQ+ travellers should exercise significant caution: same-sex relationships are illegal under UAE law, and public displays of affection between any couple can result in fines or deportation.

Gold/jewelry shop overcharge (Deira/Gold Souk)
highWhere: Gold Souk Deira, some Old Dubai shops
What happens: Massive markups for foreign tourists; aggressive bargaining required. 'Free' chai while you decide.

mediumWhere: Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Madinat Jumeirah souk
What happens: Mass-produced trinkets sold as 'antique Bedouin artifacts' for 500-2,000 AED
How to avoid: Check Madinat Jumeirah souvenir prices first (transparent). Real antiques only at certified dealers.
Online booking fraud (apartment/villa)
criticalWhere: Marina, JBR, Downtown short-term rentals
What happens: Fake Airbnb/Booking.com listings, often via WhatsApp inquiry redirect; deposit lost
How to avoid: Book ONLY through Booking.com, Airbnb's official app. Never wire-transfer. Pay with credit card for chargeback ability.
Pickpocketing in malls

highWhere: Standalone ATMs especially Deira, Naif, near souks
What happens: Skimmer + camera for PIN. Account drained in hours.
How to avoid: Use ATMs INSIDE major bank branches (Emirates NBD, ENBD, ADCB, Mashreq) only. Not those in shops/streets.
Desert safari low-cost trap
mediumWhere: Internet-booked cheap desert safaris
What happens: $30 'all-inclusive' safari = battered 4x4, no insurance, mediocre BBQ. Some accidents reported.
How to avoid: Book reputable: Platinum Heritage, Arabian Adventures, OceanAir Travels. Expect 250-400 AED ($70-110).

Photo of locals
highWhere: Anywhere — beach, mall, restaurants
What happens: NOT a scam but a legal issue — photographing Emirati women without consent = criminal offense; some pretend offense for cash
How to avoid: NEVER photograph people without explicit permission. No selfies with strangers in background. Especially women.

I quit advertising in 2019 and have spent the last six years living out of two backpacks across India. Spiti is my one true love — three winters there now, two on a Royal Enfield I do not recommend renting. I write because the intel that kept me safe was buried in old TripAdvisor threads and women-only Facebook groups, and that is not a good system.
