Safety verdict
Lisbon, Portugal is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. Verified by Leila Khan, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-03-18.
Lisbon is one of Europe's safest cities for solo women — harassment is uncommon and violent crime is genuinely rare.
Pickpocketing is concentrated on Tram 28, in the Alfama district, and around Belém tourist sites — keep your bag zipped and held in front, especially in crowds.
Uber works well throughout Lisbon and is cheaper than street taxis; use it after dark rather than hailing a cab.
The hills are steeper than photos suggest — comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. Funiculars (elevadores) and tuk-tuks are legitimate everyday transport, not just tourist gimmicks.
Accommodation fills up fast June through September; book at least 6–8 weeks ahead in peak summer or prices double and quality drops sharply.
