Is Seoul safe for female travelers?
Seoul, South Korea is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. The most commonly reported issue is "Unlicensed taxi (illegal callvan)" : Use Kakao T app (NOT Uber, weak in Korea). Wait at official taxi stands. Seoul is extremely safe for solo women — violent crime rates are among the lowest globally and CCTV coverage is extensive across the city.

Get a T-money card at the airport: it works on all metro lines, buses, and taxis, and you top it up at any convenience store.

Itaewon and Hongdae are the main nightlife zones — drink only poured-in-front-of-you drinks, and use Kakao T (the local Uber equivalent) rather than hailing cabs after midnight.

Unlicensed taxi (illegal callvan)
highWhere: Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam after midnight when subway closes
What happens: Black 'callvan' or unmarked car charges 3-4x metered taxi for ride. Especially at popular nightlife exits.
How to avoid: Use Kakao T app (NOT Uber, weak in Korea). Wait at official taxi stands. Real taxis: silver/orange/black with TAXI roof sign + meter.
Christian cult recruitment
mediumWhere: Hongdae, Sinchon, Gangnam streets — targets foreigners
What happens: Friendly Korean approaches asking for directions, then invites to 'free Korean lesson' or 'cultural exchange'. Leads to multi-hour cult sessions, attempts at conversion + payment.
How to avoid: Polite decline + walk on. Recognize patterns: clipboard, English skills mismatch, scripted questions about religion.
Tourist-area restaurant overcharging

What happens: Korean BBQ/seafood/ginseng chicken at 2-3x normal price; English menu has higher prices than Korean menu

Fashion district counterfeit

ATM skimming + DCC

What happens: Skimming + DCC trap (offer 'pay in your currency' — 5% worse rate)
How to avoid: Use ATMs at major banks (KB, Shinhan, Woori) inside branches. Always select 'KRW' not USD on screen.
Cosmetic surgery / clinic upselling

What happens: $50 'consultation' becomes hard-sell pressure; deposit required for procedures pricier than promised

Aggressive selling in Insadong

Free Wi-Fi phishing

DMZ tour bait-switch
