Safety verdict
Seoul, South Korea is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. The most commonly reported issue is "Unlicensed taxi (illegal callvan)" : Use Kakao T app (NOT Uber, weak in Korea). Wait at official taxi stands. Real taxis: silver/orange/black with TAXI roof sign + meter.. Verified by Ananya Iyer, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-04-28.
Seoul is extremely safe for solo women — violent crime rates are among the lowest globally and CCTV coverage is extensive across the city.
Get a T-money card at the airport: it works on all metro lines, buses, and taxis, and you top it up at any convenience store.
Itaewon and Hongdae are the main nightlife zones — drink only poured-in-front-of-you drinks, and use Kakao T (the local Uber equivalent) rather than hailing cabs after midnight.
Solo women of colour may experience staring and occasional surprise at their Korean — this is cultural curiosity more than hostility, but it can be tiring over a long trip.
Download Naver Maps before you arrive: it is significantly more accurate than Google Maps for Korean public transport and walking directions.

Unlicensed taxi (illegal callvan)
highWhere: Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam after midnight when subway closes
What happens: Black 'callvan' or unmarked car charges 3-4x metered taxi for ride. Especially at popular nightlife exits.
How to avoid: Use Kakao T app (NOT Uber, weak in Korea). Wait at official taxi stands. Real taxis: silver/orange/black with TAXI roof sign + meter.
Christian cult recruitment
mediumWhere: Hongdae, Sinchon, Gangnam streets — targets foreigners
What happens: Friendly Korean approaches asking for directions, then invites to 'free Korean lesson' or 'cultural exchange'. Leads to multi-hour cult sessions, attempts at conversion + payment.
How to avoid: Polite decline + walk on. Recognize patterns: clipboard, English skills mismatch, scripted questions about religion.
Tourist-area restaurant overcharging
mediumWhere: Myeongdong, Insadong, near Gyeongbokgung Palace
What happens: Korean BBQ/seafood/ginseng chicken at 2-3x normal price; English menu has higher prices than Korean menu
How to avoid: Use Naver Maps (Korean Yelp) reviews. Eat where Koreans eat — packed locals = good price + quality. Ask for Korean menu if available.
Fashion district counterfeit
mediumWhere: Dongdaemun Market, Myeongdong, Itaewon
What happens: Fake designer goods marketed as 'authentic', or knockoff K-beauty brands at inflated prices
How to avoid: Designer = department stores (Lotte, Shinsegae, Hyundai). K-beauty: Olive Young (legit chain), Innisfree, Etude House official stores.
ATM skimming + DCC
highWhere: Standalone ATMs especially Itaewon/Hongdae
What happens: Skimming + DCC trap (offer 'pay in your currency' — 5% worse rate)
How to avoid: Use ATMs at major banks (KB, Shinhan, Woori) inside branches. Always select 'KRW' not USD on screen.
Cosmetic surgery / clinic upselling
mediumWhere: Gangnam, Apgujeong (cosmetic surgery streets)
What happens: $50 'consultation' becomes hard-sell pressure; deposit required for procedures pricier than promised
How to avoid: Research clinics via Korea Tourism Org partner list. Get all prices in writing before deposit. Don't go in solo if cult-vulnerable.
Aggressive selling in Insadong
mediumWhere: Insadong shopping district
What happens: Vendors quote inflated prices for 'traditional Korean handicrafts' that are mass-produced
How to avoid: Bargain (uncommon in Korea otherwise but expected here). Compare prices across multiple stalls.
Free Wi-Fi phishing
mediumWhere: Tourist areas, airports, cafés
What happens: Fake Wi-Fi ('Korea Free' / 'Tourist Wi-Fi'); captures bank login data
How to avoid: Use mobile data (eSIM/SIM) for banking. VPN if must use public Wi-Fi (NordVPN, ExpressVPN).
DMZ tour bait-switch
mediumWhere: Booked DMZ (North Korean border) tours
What happens: Cheap online listing turns out to be 'DMZ overview' from far away, no JSA visit
How to avoid: Book via Koridoor, VIP Travel, or Klook with reviews. Confirm whether JSA (Joint Security Area) is included before paying.
Karaoke (noraebang) overcharging
mediumWhere: Hongdae, Gangnam late-night
What happens: Some 'karaoke' venues are room-salons with hostesses; charge $200-500 for drinks
How to avoid: Use coin noraebang chains (multi-bang places) — fixed pricing. Or noraebang inside reputable buildings (not hidden alleys).

I quit advertising in 2019 and have spent the last six years living out of two backpacks across India. Spiti is my one true love — three winters there now, two on a Royal Enfield I do not recommend renting. I write because the intel that kept me safe was buried in old TripAdvisor threads and women-only Facebook groups, and that is not a good system.
