Agra is a high-pressure tourist city and manageable with specific preparation. The Taj Mahal is safe during entry hours — the East Gate has the shortest queues and fewest touts. Book your entry ticket online (archaeologicalsurvey.gov.in) to skip the physical ticket queue entirely. Stay in the Taj Ganj area for easy morning access. The city itself is not particularly walkable beyond the main tourist corridor — use Ola for all transport and consider Agra as a day trip from Delhi or Jaipur rather than a multi-night stay.
The most reported Taj Mahal scams: (1) Fake guides at the East Gate — only book ASI-licensed guides at the official counter inside the gate. (2) Marble souvenir shops that claim to sell 'Taj marble' — there is no such thing; the Taj is protected, no marble is sourced from it. (3) Rickshaw drivers who agree a price to the Taj then demand double at the gate. (4) Photo touts who take your picture uninvited and demand payment. Use an Ola to the gate, buy your ticket online, and decline all guidance offers outside the official ASI counter.
Taj Ganj (within walking distance of the Taj's South Gate) is the main tourist accommodation hub — well-patrolled, walkable, good guesthouses and rooftop restaurants. Sadar Bazaar area is the alternative — slightly quieter, better mid-range hotels. Avoid guesthouses in non-tourist lanes outside these two areas. For a day trip from Delhi: the Gatimaan Express takes 1.5 hours, departs Hazrat Nizamuddin; the Taj Express takes 2 hours from New Delhi station — both are fast enough to do the Taj and Agra Fort and be back by evening.
Buy tickets online at asi.payumoney.com or at the official ASI ticket counter — not from any person approaching you on the street. Foreign visitor price: ₹1,100 (includes Agra Fort; free if you visit within the same day). Indian citizen price: ₹50. The East Gate has the fewest touts and shortest queues; the South Gate is closest to Taj Ganj guesthouses but busiest. No photography equipment beyond smartphones is allowed inside (tripods, professional cameras require a permit). Ticket includes shoe covers and a 500ml water bottle at the main gate.
