Methanol-laced cocktails causing blindness and death

Home-distilled arak spiked with methanol. 334+ suspected cases since 2019 per Doctors Without Borders. A tourist was left with 2% vision after one cocktail in Bali 2025. Deaths reported. One shot of methanol can be fatal. ONLY drink sealed beer, wine, or duty-free spirits you opened yourself. Avoid cocktails and shots at unlicensed venues.

Money changer fast-fold short-count trick

High advertised rates lure you in, then the cashier palms notes in a fast fold during counting. Viral TikTok 2025 (1.9 M views) caught it on camera at an Ubud counter. Use only licensed operators: PT Central Kuta or PT Dirgahayu. Verify at moneychangerbali.com (Bank Indonesia portal).

Drug peddlers acting as police informants

Locals offer magic mushrooms, ecstasy, or cocaine in tourist zones. Many work with local police: you buy, police appear, you're arrested. Indonesia has the death penalty for drug trafficking and long jail terms for possession. Several foreigners have been executed. Decline all offers, no exceptions.

Seminyak and Kuta beach riptides : no lifeguard warning

Bali's most popular beaches are largely unpatrolled. A local father drowned at Seminyak 3 Aug 2025 trying to save a child swept away. Australian Craig Stewart (56) drowned 18 Oct 2024 saving a German tourist at Balian Beach. Only swim at patrolled sections with flags. Red flag = no swimming.

Airport taxi mafia at Ngurah Rai arrivals

Unofficial drivers swarm the arrivals exit quoting 3× the fair price. Legitimate fare to Seminyak is Rp 150k–250k pre-booked; touts demand Rp 500k+. Use the Grab/Gojek waiting room inside the terminal instead.

Diamond Beach and Kelingking Beach swimming deaths

Both beaches are official no-swim zones but tourists repeatedly ignore signs. Strong unpredictable undercurrents and deceptively high waves. Indian tourist Nilesh Mukhi (59) swept away at Angel's Billabong Oct 2024 and found dead. Tourist drowned at Diamond Beach Aug 2025 despite rescue attempts. Don't enter the water.

Fake Blue Bird taxi with look-alike logo

Cars painted light blue with near-identical 'Blue Bird' logos are fakes. They refuse the meter and charge 2–3×. Real Blue Bird has 'Blue Bird Group' on the side, driver in uniform, vehicle number on dash. Download the official Blue Bird app to book direct.

Angel's Billabong wave sweeps tourists off rocks

Waves appear small but crash violently over the volcanic ledge. At least 4 people have drowned here. Indian tourist swept to death 16 Oct 2024. Viral video Sep 2025 shows a group of girls nearly washed away. Take photos from a safe distance; never stand near the water's edge regardless of conditions.

Scooter rental pre-existing damage claim

Return scooter and the rental agent 'discovers' damage you didn't cause, demanding Rp 500k+. Some shops use duplicate keys to 'steal' the scooter while parked, then charge you. Photograph every scratch and dent before riding. Get damage noted on the rental agreement. Use reputable companies (Bikago has branches islandwide).

Fake visa and e-VOA websites overcharging tourists

Unofficial websites rank high in search for 'Bali visa' and the Indonesia arrivals card and charge 2–5× the official price. One tourist's girlfriend had account details stolen mid-application. Official Indonesian government sites end with .go.id only. Pay the Bali tourist levy (Rp 150k) only at lovebali.baliprov.go.id.

ATM card skimming by Eastern European gangs

Bulgarian nationals arrested for fitting card-skimmer sleeves on ATMs in tourist areas, found with Rp 78 million. A Ukrainian woman deported after a 2-year sentence for the same. Use ATMs inside bank branches only (BCA, Mandiri, BNI, BRI). Never use standalone ATM galleries or mini-market ATMs.

Police bribe extortion from scooter riders

Officers stop tourists on scooters for minor or invented violations (mirror, license) and demand on-the-spot cash 'fine'. International driving permit is required by law in Bali; without it the fine is real (Rp 1.5 million). Carry a valid IDP. For bogus fines, ask for the official ticket and station number : many drop it.

Fake 'temple guardian' demands mandatory donation at Besakih

Men posing as 'temple guardians' intercept tourists after entry and say a guide is mandatory plus a donation. They show a book with entries up to $100. Everything : guide, sarong, shuttle : is already included in the Rp 150k entry ticket. Real priests never ask for cash. Report pushy individuals at the info desk.

Broken meter taxi switch mid-ride

Driver agrees to meter, then claims it's broken mid-journey and demands an inflated fixed price. Agree on meter before entering; if the meter suddenly 'breaks', end the ride. Use Grab or Gojek for fixed app pricing.

Grab/Gojek banned in tourist zones : forced into local taxis

Local taxi cooperatives ('mafias') prohibit app-based pickups in multiple tourist hotspots. Tourists exiting Uluwatu temple, the Canggu main strip, or the ferry ports get forced into unregulated overpriced local transport. Negotiate price firmly before boarding or walk to the zone boundary to use apps.
