Delhi is manageable for solo women with the right neighbourhood and transport choices. The safest areas to base yourself: Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh. Avoid Paharganj for accommodation — it has the highest reported harassment density. The Delhi Metro is excellent and safe: use the women-only coach (first coach, marked pink) which operates all hours. Use Ola or Uber for all non-Metro journeys. Prepaid taxi from the airport is the only safe option on arrival.
The four most reported scams in Delhi: (1) Fake 'Government Tourist Office' — there is no government tourist office at any Delhi monument; every 'tourist office' near Connaught Place or Paharganj earns commission. (2) Auto-driver takes you to the wrong destination — only take autos with meters; use Ola Auto for a tracked, priced ride. (3) Sharing your hotel name with helpful strangers at the airport or in autos — strangers have appeared at hotels using this information. (4) ATM skimming near tourist zones — use only bank-branded ATMs inside bank branches.
The Delhi Metro is one of the safest urban transit systems in India for women. Use the women-only coach (first coach, marked pink, operational all hours) on all lines. Stations to be more aware at night: Paharganj/New Delhi (heavy homeless population on exits), Connaught Place exits after midnight. Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place) closes at midnight — plan your journey accordingly. The Yellow Line (HUDA City Centre to Samaypur Badli) and Blue Line are the most frequently used by solo women travellers.
The Delhi Airport Metro Express (orange line) is the safest and cheapest option — runs every 10–30 minutes, takes 20 minutes to New Delhi station, costs ₹60. Prepaid taxi booth inside the arrivals hall is safe and fixed-price (₹350–500 to central Delhi). Never accept offers from men who approach you in arrivals — they are unlicensed and overcharge significantly. Avoid app taxis booked inside the arrivals hall; book Ola or Uber once you are outside the terminal and can verify the plate matches the app.
