Drink spiking and methanol poisoning risk

Travellers have been assaulted after drinks were spiked. Cheap cocktails and local spirits occasionally contain methanol (industrial alcohol) : a known SE Asia risk. Never accept drinks from strangers. Don't leave drinks unattended. Stick to sealed beer (Bia Hoi) or reputable bar brands. Methanol symptoms include blurred vision, nausea, confusion : seek emergency care immediately.

Fake taxi at Noi Bai Airport

Unlicensed drivers approach inside or just outside arrivals offering cheap rides. Rigged meters charge 1,000,000+ VND for a trip that should cost 250,000–350,000 VND (~$10–14 USD). Some claim your hotel is 'closed' and divert you to a partner hotel for commission. Use Grab before leaving the terminal, or only take Mai Linh (green cab, 1055) or Thanh Nga branded taxis from official stands.

Grab motorbike and car options have licensed drivers, GPS tracking, and in-app payment. Always safer than hailing a random xe ôm.

Fake Vietnam eVisa website

Third-party websites mirror the official Vietnam eVisa portal, appear as top Google results, and overcharge with 'VIP service', 'processing' or 'stamping' fees. Some harvest passport and credit card data without issuing a valid visa. Official site: evisa.gov.vn : only the .gov.vn domain is legitimate. Official fees: $25 (30-day single), $50 (90-day).

Friendly stranger card gambling trap

Friendly local strikes up conversation near the lake, invites you home to 'meet a relative interested in your country'. While waiting, suggests a casual card game with a small initial wager. Stakes escalate rapidly. Some tourists have lost thousands of dollars in one evening. Never accept home invitations from new acquaintances.

Motorbike bag snatch

Thieves on motorbikes snatch bags, phones, and cameras from pedestrians : sometimes causing injury if you resist. Targets are shoulder bags, dangling phone in hand, and anyone walking on the outer edge of the pavement. Walk on the inner side. Use a crossbody bag worn in front. Never use your phone while standing on a kerb.

Fruit basket photo trap

Vendor in conical hat invites a 'free photo' with bamboo baskets or fruit. After the shot, demands aggressive payment : sometimes grabbing money directly from your hand. Others start peeling coconuts or fruit for you mid-photo and insist you buy at inflated price. Decline all unsolicited photo ops. Fair coconut price: 10,000–30,000 VND.

Fake Ha Long Bay tour operators in Old Quarter

Street agents sell 'budget' Ha Long cruises that don't match the brochure : old boats, no life vests, different itinerary. Book directly with certified operators.

Pre-damaged motorbike rental trap

Shop issues a bike with pre-existing scratches or damage and withholds your passport as deposit. On return, claims you caused the damage and demands $200–500 USD in 'repairs'. Police involvement is threatened. Never surrender your original passport : offer a colour photocopy only. Photograph the entire bike before riding. Avoid shops requiring passport as collateral.

Fake taxi driver ATM robbery at airport

Criminals posing as taxi drivers with name placards have robbed foreign visitors by forcing them to withdraw cash from ATMs. Confirm driver identity and licence plate before entering any car. Always pre-arrange airport pickup through your hotel.

Pedestrian crossing danger : motorbikes everywhere

Hanoi has one of the world's highest motorbike densities. Motorbikes ride on pavements, ignore red lights, and go against traffic. Don't assume any crossing is safe. Cross slowly and steadily : never run. Maintain a constant pace so riders can calculate around you. Hesitation is more dangerous than slow steady movement. Hold children's and elderly's hands at every crossing.

Aggressive shoe shiner in Old Quarter

Shiner grabs your shoe mid-walk or while you browse. Normal price is 20,000 VND/pair (<$1). After uninvited 'shine' or 'repair', the bill escalates to 50,000–500,000 VND. They know you won't walk away barefoot. Keep moving when approached : stopping is the trap.

Cyclo overcharging in Old Quarter

Cyclo drivers agree verbally to 20,000 VND but demand 200,000 at destination. Agree on price in writing and confirm if it's per person before boarding.

Xe Om motorbike taxi 'add a zero' fare scam

Agree on 50,000 VND verbally. Driver claims at the end you said 500,000 VND (adding a zero). No written record, no witnesses. Demand the fare be written on paper before riding. Use Grab for all motorbike rides : fare is fixed and GPS-tracked.

Pickpocketing at crowded markets

Organised pickpocket teams work in crowded market lanes : one distracts (bumps into you, asks for directions) while another lifts a wallet, phone, or camera. Risk increases around Tet and Western holidays. Use front zip pockets. Leave non-essentials in the hotel safe. Carry only the day's cash.
