Safety verdict
Hanoi, Vietnam is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. The most commonly reported issue is "Donut scam (Hanoi Old Quarter)" : Don't accept any 'free taste' from street vendors. Get banh mi instead โ better food, fixed prices.. Verified by Ananya Iyer, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-04-28.
Hanoi is generally safe but requires active scam awareness โ the most common are motorbike taxi overcharging, tampered taxi meters, and 'free walking tour' guides who route you through commission shops.
Use Grab for all transport: it shows the fare upfront, removes negotiation entirely, and eliminates the meter fraud that is common in unmarked taxis.
Crossing roads in the Old Quarter has a specific technique โ walk slowly and steadily, do not hesitate or run, and traffic will flow around you. Stopping is more dangerous than continuing.
The most-flagged street scam: a friendly stranger befriends you near Hoan Kiem Lake, invites you for tea or food, then disappears leaving a bill of โซ1,000,000 or more.
Halong Bay day trips from Hanoi are real, but budget operators cut corners on safety โ only book with an operator that can show a current safety inspection certificate.
