Kolkata has a reputation as one of the friendlier Indian metro cities for solo women. It is rated Low risk by Nomira contributors. The city has a strong intellectual and cultural identity — women walking alone are commonplace. Park Street and Salt Lake are the safest areas for accommodation. The Metro is safe and women-only coaches operate in the first coach. Main risks: petty theft in crowded markets (New Market, Burrabazar), and auto-rickshaws that refuse to run by meter — use Ola for all app-based rides.
The most reported incidents in Kolkata: (1) Petty theft in crowded markets — New Market and Burrabazar are the densest areas; keep bags zipped and in front. (2) Auto and taxi overcharging — insist on meter or use Ola. (3) Fake charitable collectors near tourist sites — anyone approaching with a printed card asking for donations near Dakshineswar or Kalighat is likely not affiliated with the temple. The Kalighat temple area specifically has reports of aggressive flower-sellers who force garlands into your hands and demand payment.
Park Street and the surrounding area (5th–7th floors of restaurants, Jazz pubs, bakeries) are safe until late — the area is well-lit and active. Salt Lake (Sector V) is the tech hub and safest area for nightlife. Ballygunge is calm and residential. New Market area is safe for daytime shopping. Avoid Howrah Bridge foot traffic alone after 10pm — it is poorly lit on the sides. The Kumartuli potters' quarter is safe for a solo daytime walk and one of Kolkata's most unique experiences.
Kolkata is the only Indian city with a functioning tram network. Trams are slow (faster to walk in traffic) but historically significant — Routes 36 and 37 go through heritage areas. Trams are safe for solo women during the day; avoid after dark as they are infrequent and the stops can be isolated. The Hooghly River ferry (Ghat to Ghat) is safe and cheap (₹6–8) and a good way to cross to Howrah — mornings are calm and least crowded. Evening ferries before sunset are fine; after dark use Ola for river crossings via Howrah Bridge.
