Safety verdict
Kolkata, India is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. The most commonly reported issue is "Pickpocketing on Kolkata Metro & at Howrah" : Front pocket, zipped bag. Especially on Howrah-Dum Dum line during rush.. Verified by Leila Khan, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-04-10.
Kolkata is one of India's safest cities for solo women — the street culture is genuinely different.
The Metro is clean, safe, and has women-only coaches; yellow taxis are metered and reliable.
Park Street is the nightlife and café spine; Ballygunge and Lake Road are the best residential bases.
Howrah Bridge at dawn (6–7am) is one of the most photogenic 20 minutes in India — and there are almost no touts.
Budget ₹3–4 days: Kumartuli potters' quarter and New Market are completely off most tourist itineraries.

Auto/Taxi Meter Refusal & Inflation
highWhere: All 12 cities (worst: Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Varanasi)
What happens: Driver says meter is 'broken', quotes flat fare 3–10x normal. In Mumbai it's rarer because of strict meter culture. In Bangalore mostly auto drivers at airport/railway.
How to avoid: Default to Uber/Ola/Rapido — they're cheap and GPS-tracked. If using auto, agree fare upfront after checking Uber price. In Mumbai insist on meter (it's the law).
Train Ticket / IRCTC Scam
highWhere: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Varanasi
What happens: Near railway stations, agents sell 'confirmed tickets' that are fake or for slow local trains sold as fast express. Variant: tout claims 'your train is cancelled' and herds you to a fake ticket counter to sell flights/tours at 5x rates.
How to avoid: Book ONLY via irctc.co.in, IRCTC Rail Connect app, MakeMyTrip, or RedBus. Verify train status on the official IRCTC app. Ignore anyone outside the station offering ticket help.
