Tokyo is consistently ranked one of the safest cities in the world for solo women. Violent crime is extremely rare. However, specific risks exist: the Roppongi nightlife district has documented incidents of drink spiking and overcharging at bars (foreign men running 'hostess bar' traps with ₹100,000+ bills). Model-scout fraud (approaching young women to 'join an agency') is reported in Shibuya and Harajuku. Rush-hour train groping (chikan) is the most commonly reported incident — use the women-only cars on the Chuo, Keihin-Tohoku, and other major JR and Metro lines during peak hours.
The main risks for solo women in Tokyo: (1) Roppongi bar fraud — a friendly man (often a Nigerian tout) invites you to a bar; the bill for one drink arrives at ¥30,000–100,000. Never follow anyone into a Roppongi bar you did not choose independently. (2) Drink spiking in Roppongi and Kabukicho (Shinjuku) — keep your drink in your hand at all times in nightlife areas. (3) Model-scout fraud — scouts in Shibuya and Harajuku ask young women to attend 'auditions' that lead to high-pressure debt schemes. Legitimate agencies do not scout on the street. (4) Rush-hour groping — women-only carriages (marked pink, operational during peak hours) are available on all major rail lines.
Safest areas for solo women: Shinjuku (massive, busy, well-lit — Kabukicho is the red-light area but the main commercial Shinjuku is safe), Shibuya (cosmopolitan, young crowd, safe all hours), Harajuku and Omotesando (fashion and café street, very safe), Yanaka and Nezu (traditional neighbourhood, very calm and local), Ueno (busy around the park, safe for daytime). Avoid Roppongi entirely for bar-hopping unless you know the specific bar. Kabukicho in Shinjuku is active and safe if you stay on the main streets.
Women-only carriages operate on the Chuo Line (Rapid), Keihin-Tohoku Line, Saikyo Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line, Tokyo Metro Hanzomon and Fukutoshin Lines, and others. They are marked with pink signage on the platform and operate during morning peak hours (approximately 7:30–9:30am) and sometimes evening peak (varies by line). Check the sticker on the carriage door to confirm hours. IC cards (Suica or Pasmo) are the most efficient way to use all JR and Metro lines — buy at any station machine or load on iPhone/Android. A 24-hour Metro pass (¥600) covers all 9 Tokyo Metro lines.
