Safety verdict
Tokyo, Japan is generally manageable for solo women travelers who plan ahead. The most commonly reported issue is "Kabukicho / Roppongi tout 'free drink'" : NEVER follow anyone soliciting on the street to a bar. Use only places you researched on Google Maps or Tabelog with reviews. Cash for nightlife (limit damage).. Verified by Ananya Iyer, a named contributor on Nomira. Last verified 2026-04-28.
Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world for solo women โ violent crime and harassment are genuinely rare, day or night.
The metro and JR rail system covers everything; buy a Suica or Pasmo IC card on arrival โ it works on every line and saves you buying single tickets each time.
In Shinjuku's entertainment district, avoid well-dressed men outside host clubs who approach with 'free drink' offers โ they are commission touts and the bill arrives later.
Google Translate's camera mode reads Japanese menus and signs in real time; download the offline Japanese language pack before you land.
ATMs in convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, Family Mart) reliably accept foreign cards โ most bank ATMs do not.

Kabukicho / Roppongi tout 'free drink'
criticalWhere: Shinjuku Kabukicho, Roppongi, parts of Shibuya
What happens: Friendly tout offers 'cheap all-you-can-drink' or 'first drink free'; bar bill = 50,000-300,000 JPY ($300-2,000); intimidation if refused; sometimes drink-spiked
How to avoid: NEVER follow anyone soliciting on the street to a bar. Use only places you researched on Google Maps or Tabelog with reviews. Cash for nightlife (limit damage).
Drink spiking (Roppongi)
criticalWhere: Roppongi gaijin bars + Kabukicho
What happens: GHB or rohypnol; victim wakes up missing money/cards/phone or assault
How to avoid: Avoid Roppongi gaijin bars solo. Order bottled drinks. Watch bartender pour. Never accept drinks from strangers.
Marc/Alex 'lost wallet' scam
mediumWhere: Tokyo/Osaka trains, especially targeting solo women
What happens: Foreign man (often called 'Marc' or 'Alex') in black clothes approaches solo travelers showing phone message saying 'help, lost wallet, need to get to airport'
How to avoid: Recognize the pattern (black hat, mask, persistent). Ignore him. Real travelers don't beg from strangers in Japan โ embassies help.
Fake 'monk' donation
mediumWhere: Near temples โ Asakusa Sensoji, Ueno, sometimes Kyoto
What happens: Person dressed as Buddhist monk hands you bracelet/card and demands donation
How to avoid: Real monks don't beg on the street. Ignore + walk past. Don't accept anything offered.
Model-scout scam
highWhere: Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku โ targets young women
What happens: 'Talent agent' approaches solo woman, offers contract, takes to office where pressured to sign/pay 'training fees' or worse
How to avoid: Real Japanese model agencies don't street-scout foreigners. Politely decline + walk away. Never go to a private office.
'Charity' donation (laminated photos)
mediumWhere: Shinjuku, Shibuya, tourist areas
What happens: Person with binder/laminated photos showing other 'donors' pressures you for large donation
How to avoid: Laminated props = scam. Real charities never solicit cash from tourists on streets.
Counterfeit fashion (Harajuku/Shinjuku)
mediumWhere: Tourist-heavy shopping areas
What happens: 'Authentic' designer items at low prices = fakes; or fake-marketing pseudo-luxury
How to avoid: Department stores (Isetan, Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya) only for designer. Vintage/2nd-hand: Komehyo or RagTag are reputable.
ATM withdrawal denial / DCC
mediumWhere: All Japan ATMs
What happens: DCC offer ('pay in your home currency') = 5-8% worse rate
How to avoid: ALWAYS pay in JPY, not your home currency. Use 7-Eleven (Seven Bank) or Japan Post Bank ATMs (lowest fees).
Taxi long-route
mediumWhere: Tokyo airports, less common in metered Tokyo taxis
What happens: Driver takes 30-min detour through unfamiliar area, you can't tell
How to avoid: Use Google Maps live tracking. Or use Go Taxi/JapanTaxi app for transparent metered fares.
Tax-free purchase confusion
mediumWhere: Department stores; some smaller shops
What happens: Foreigners qualify for tax-free shopping (>5,000 JPY purchase, passport required); some small stores claim no tax-free even when they should offer it
How to avoid: Bring passport. Look for 'Tax Free' sticker. At Bic Camera/Don Quijote/large stores: ask 'tax-free counter'.

I write because the intel that kept me safe was buried in old TripAdvisor threads and women-only Facebook groups, and that is not a good system.
