What happens: Friendly local introduces you to a 'family jeweller'. You're told you can 'export' gems duty-free and resell abroad for huge profit; they ship to your country. Stones are worthless glass/synthetic. Variant: a fake government 'official' calls later demanding fines.
How to avoid: NEVER buy gems/carpets to export. NEVER let a stranger guide you to a shop. Walk away the moment 'export profit' is mentioned. This is the same scam since the 1980s.
Fake Priest / Tilak / Forced Blessing
highWhere: Varanasi (ghats), Pushkar, Delhi (temples), Jaipur, Agra, Udaipur
What happens: A 'pandit' ties a thread (kalava) on your wrist or applies tilak before you can refuse, then chants a 'blessing' and demands ₹500–₹10,000 'donation'. Most aggressive at Manikarnika and Dashashwamedh ghats in Varanasi.
How to avoid: Hands in pockets. Firm 'no, thank you' and walk away. Don't make eye contact. If thread is tied anyway, walk away — it costs nothing if you don't pay.
